A video of a 100 year old lady making a chocolate pie
came across my FaceBook page one day....
♥ ♥ ♥
she was so adorable
♥ ♥ ♥
she was so adorable
and sharp-witted, showing us how to make her
CHOCOLATE PIE,
that I just HAD to make it, too.
I have my mother's fabulous recipe for her Chocolate Pie
but I had never made one using evaporated milk
nor using water...
(I remember after WW2 seeing my mother and aunts use
evaporated milk in their coffee)
This pie was a tad too sweet for me...
I think 1/2 or 3/4th cup of sugar would be plenty...
I would rather have my filling less sweet and have the meringue sweetened a bit more.
This is a store-bought crust and I didn't like it very much...at all.
First off, it was too large for the amount of filling ...
not flaky at all...
next time, I'll make my own.

It was delicious...
very very good...
but I must say...
it didn't measure up to my mama's Chocolate Pie...
...does ANYthing ever measure up to our MOMS...??
I think not.
Hers was creamier...
very very good...

Hers was creamier...
but THIS one is delicious...
I favor fruit pies over creams, I think...
Beside CHERRY pie,
APPLE is No. 2
Bake yourself your favorite pie today...
and, don't forget the
ICE CREAM !
Much love,
bj
It would be dangerous for me to bake a pie...though when the rhubarb is up...
ReplyDeleteBJ, I was never much of a pie maker. I like pies but rarely ever eat them . I am more of a cookie eater, I guess. But your chocolate pie looks very good to me. So nice you have your mom's recipe. I think as we age, everything taste so different. I thought your napkin, "seas the day" was so cute. I love little paper napkins with treats, or coffee. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteYummmy! It looks too pretty to eat! I agree, I like my mirangue a little sweet too. The skillet apple pie looks sooooo good! Thank you for sharing! ~jackie~
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteThis post spoke right to me this morning!
I love pie.
Given the choice, I take pie over cake any day!!
One of our favorites is a super easy one.
I posted it over on my blog...Cherry-Berry.
Sooooo good!
Thanks for the lovely post this morning. : )
It made me think of my dear Daddy.
He loved a good piece of Lemon Meringue Pie.
I've never used evaporated milk in anything personally. I think I've eaten fudge my mother used to make before, I think.
ReplyDeleteBJ, I found a recipe on someone's blog that makes approx. 20 pie crusts. It calls for a whole bag of flour and a can of crisco, plus eggs and such. I made it and stored it in portions in my freezer in zip locs. So when I get the hankering for pie, it takes about 15 min to thaw one out, then I roll it out with flour and voila! I should make a chocolate pie - Hubby loves those. And thanks for the heads up about the sugar! The link to the recipe:

MY OH MY...they both look amazing BJ...I simply adore the color through your eyes! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI need to make a cherry pie. It was my Dad's favorite and so I always loved it too!
ReplyDeleteThe pies look delicious. Wish I could enjoy a piece but it would have to be sugar free. Have a blessed day. Madeline
ReplyDeleteThe most wonderful sentence in the English language -- "Save your fork, there's pie!"
ReplyDeleteYour pie in the skillet looks so very pretty. Now you've got me wanting chocolate pie! I think you could sell ice to Eskimos girl.
ReplyDeletelooks delish!
ReplyDeleteHahaha - I'm sorry but whenever I see chocolate pie I think of the movie "The Help". If you haven't seen it, just google and find the chocolate pie scene. My sweet mom made terrible chocolate pie -- basically 2 pkgs. chocolate pudding poured into a pie crust lol. I grew up HATING chocolate pie so I think I have to try a real recipe like this one to decide if I like or don't like chocolate pie!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pie is blueberry and then cherry. You are so right, nothing is like what your mom made
ReplyDeleteCindy
This looks yummy! I love pie too! I like the fork. I have a red one just like it that is considered my favorite.
ReplyDeleteLisa
I love almost all pies and that's a problem. I do prefer pie over cake too!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I'd take pie over cake, any day of the week.
ReplyDeleteThat pie looks so good. Save me a slice.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
hmmmmm maybe it's because you're not old enough to make 100 yr old pie like a pro BJ????!
ReplyDeleteRunning now before you throw some at me!
Wot a laugh.

I'm glad you liked the pictures B.J.!--wish you were here to walk with me, I'd show you all the old houses and the pretty gardens! I loved today's post...oh my goodness, all those PIES! Sure takes me back....my Ma-Maws made pies. One made the best butterscotch and chocolate pies, I sure looked forward to them! I am not good at making pies. Guess I didn't get the pie making abilities, LOL! Chocolate is my favorite. I don't much like fruit pies...I go for the cream and meringue pies!
ReplyDeleteI'm more of a fruit pie person, too -- less so for the cream ones (although pecan is an exception). Maybe it's because they have more texture. But boy, pie sure looks good today!
ReplyDeleteMy Mister Irish needs to start following you!
ReplyDeleteHe is a “pie guy!”
Does he make pie . . . never . . .
But he has the “eating pie down pat!” Rhubarb his favorite . . .
I am not a pie gal, although Banana Cream in a graham cracker crust
like how my mom made it . . .WOW!
Right you are bj, nothing like the way our mom made things.
Chocolate Pie sounds good . . . Happy you enjoyed !
Oh my! It all looks so good! Here I am trying to limit sugar.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pie is coconut cream, my Sister-in-law makes the BEST one ever! I just ordered a couple of those little pie birds as gifts! Enjoy your day dear B.J. I hope the sun is shining where you are:) HUGS!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pies bj ... I just know they are delicious. Mr. Z. would love the chocolate ... I like lemon.
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful week.
Hugs,
Audrey Z.
Chocolate pie is one of my favorite - I love it. I know your mama's pie would be the best. MY auntie made the best ones also.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I have this darn heart procedure over with I am having a good cup of coffee and a piece of pie. LOL
Have a great week.
Hugs,
Mary
Don't have a pie plate here but had oodles back in the US; should have packed on to bring with me. Love chocolate pie. And my dad to his dying day drank his coffee with evaporated milk in it! Thanks for the memories this post brought! xxx J.
