A Sign of the Times

A good blogging friend, KAREN at KARENS UP ON THE HILL,
has a way with soft, deluded colors that I envy...
her decorating is simple, beautiful and pure class.

I stalk her constantly....I just know, that every now and then,
she sees a shadow in her house and it's probably me,
hiding behind walls and furniture and plants...
trying to see what she has next for her blogging friends.

She posted this amazing COW painting
and I almost had a runaway....
just nearly dropped DEAD IN MY TRACKS...

I mean, who WOULDN'T want an adorable cow painting
when it makes a wall LOOK THIS GOOD ..??

Well, you can bet your mama's cherry pie that I started an
INTENSE  SEARCH....

I think I visited every ETSY shop on line...finding beautiful paintings...

but not until I met this beautiful lady...

so cute...
so full of whimsey with her pink and white stripes,
did I fall in love enuf to bring her to live at Sweet Nothings.

funny thing is,
I didn't even KNOW I wanted a cute cow until KAREN told me I did.

I love and smile every time I look at my cutie-pie.

Then, the next thing SHE did, I wanted to copy.

Such a simple, adorable stack of SPRING SIGNS in the BEST
SPRING GREEN....
don't you just love them......

I got sick before I could find little boards and white paint and
 SPRING GREEN PAINT.....
but it's sure on MY TO DO LIST.

In the meantime, I wanted to show you the
 two BOARD SIGNS
I DO have....

nothing as soft and sweet and pretty as that lady up on the hill....

These two signs were bought a year apart and, as you can see,
aren't even the same color...

but, I do like them both...
and both sit on a windowsill in our dining room but not together. ;)
The little vintage pitcher my flower is in
belonged to one of my favorite aunts, AUNT LILLIAN....
she was my mama's oldest sister,
a nurse,
painter and story teller extraordinaire.
.

Aunt Lillian was sooo much fun.
She could tell a story better than anyone I've ever known.
She is the one I've mentioned before that always dabbed a bit
of Vanilla Flavoring behind ea ear when she baked..
I do it to this very day.

My Aunt Lillian died of a heart attack at the young age of 59.
We were all devastated .....
She didn't have natural children....
but adopted a little baby boy named BO and made her family complete.

As you see, this post took a 180 degree turn from
SIGNS to AUNT LILLIAN...
sometimes, you just can't stop a memory from springing forward...
and when one does...
I usually take it and run with it.

  1. Hi BJ,

I sure hope you're feeling a bit better. (Lay low and rest.)

Merv Griffin often told how his first wife used vanilla as her perfume. In fact, he said that's why he fell for her! Thanks for sharing.

    Happy Blue Monday!

  6. Your Aunt, what a wonderful lady, and you have a lasting memory in the pitcher, that is the loveliest I have ever seen, I wonder if at one time it was used in a bedroom, when they had a large basin to match and washed there every morning.

  7. hi BJ,
I love the words "amazing grace." It was sung at my brothers memorial service and there wasn't a dry eye in the room of 350 people. Even today when I saw your sign tears filled my eyes, So sweet friend your signs means more. You cow is adorable and makes one smile. I adore your new header and hope you and Mr. Sweets is feeling much better.
    xoxo,
    Vera

  11. OMGosh- I loved Karen's cow but I love YOURS, too! It is so very sweet!!! What a wonderful story about your Aunt Lillian. I am sorry she died so young-same age as my brother. Doesn't seem fair, does it? But just think of all the precious memories you have of her and you renew them every time you open a bottle of vanilla! I have to go check out Karen's blog. Quit doing this to me, will ya? I can barely keep up now! lol xo Diana

  14. Love the journey you take us on . . .
Much to young for your aunt Lillian to leave this life, so suddenly too.
I really like the three pics of you on the side bar . . . Maybe they have always been there but today was my first time noticing them.
    I like your " Elsie the Cow" very much . . .

  17. The power of advertising is at work. The only thing I can think of when I see these cows is "Chick-Fil-A" and I don't even like their sandwiches.

  18. I love that cow and now I may think that I need one, too. Thsnk you for sharing your memories of your precious Auntie. She left far too soon.

  19. Some of you ladies out there are so good at crafts and creating beautiful colors. I'm about to pick paint colors for my new house, and I'm at a loss!

  20. I have loved that picture every time it comes up. I think it's the snow with the cow. Cow's have such wonderful faces. There used to be a farm I would pass and the cows reminded me of teddy bears. I love yours. It looks so nice with your colors.
Don't you love it when that memory comes out of no where.
I hope you are feeling better.
    Hugs

  21. I have memories of a very special Aunt also....yours passed so young...my grandmother was the age I am now when she passed away. I like both pictures of the cows, You have good taste bj I would pick the green color, its so spring. To have your other signs in this color for spring would be nice. Switching them out with the season.

  22. Stopping by on my way from Mondahy Mosaics. I do love the cow pictures. I would love to find a great cow picture to hang above my fireplace. A wooden sign would be fun to. Loved this post.

  23. Here's a moo-related joke

A devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences out on the range. Three weeks later, a cow walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn't believe his eyes. He took the precious book out of the cow's mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, "It's a miracle!" "Not really," said the cow. "Your name is written inside the cover."

  26. Yes, so many good ideas and inspiration from blogging sisters! I love your cow BJ and must confess I have a number of cow things from earlier decorating days in our kitchen. No big photo like you have but sweet things I made and the most adorable cookie jar with a bird sitting on the cow's back. They're packed away because they are memories of life on my grandma's farm. My other grandmother - Lillian was a great story teller too, must come with the name. :-)
Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday.
