Dates...

ahhhh....when I was in high school,
if I didn't have a DATE for the weekend,
I was crushed.

I had some amazing boyfriends thru high school
and I always loved * "going steady"
because that always insured dates throughout the weekend.
* for those grandkids of mine that don't understand what "GOING STEADY" means...
it simply meant NO OTHER BOYS for me...
NO OTHER GIRLS for him.
also, it usually meant you got to wear his senior ring on a chain around your neck...
marking HIS TERRITORY.

ahhh...the 50's

What a wonderful time I had...

I graduated high school in 1956 and we
will have our 60th reunion in the summer of 2016.
I just can't wait....we've lost so many of our classmates...when you reach your 70's, things like that happen.

And most anyone that knows me, in real life or cyber life, knows that I STILL love
ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC...
Ray Charles
Fats
Little Richard
Elvis
Chuck Berry
so so many more...
*************************************
But, hey....I am totally starting off on the wrong subject....
DATES....like those you COOK with....that's my subject today. hhhaaha

When I was young, my Aunt Lola made the BEST Date Nut Cake on the planet.
I am blessed 'cause I have her recipe...
served with a good SHARP CHEDDAR CHEESE, it will knock your sox off.

Thru the holidays, I thought of making her cake several times ....
it really doesn't take long to make...
Oh...not as fast a box cake....but not too long.

However, with all the activities going on thru  the holidays,
and we already had 2 cakes and COOKIES BY THE GRANDS....
SO...
I decided to make these little loaf cakes...

Then, I reasoned, I could freeze part of them for later in the winter.

This cake is so good with a cup of hot tea..

I love this tea mug that I found at
Ross a couple years ago.

I keep looking for more but haven't found them...guess I could Google and find more.

I prefer a mug over a tiny tea cup...

and this BENTLEY'S TEA
is really good.

I especially love the
RASPBERRY GREEN.

When I was growing up, my mother didn't drink hot tea so I didn't have it until I was a senior in high school. I spent the night with a friend and the next morning, her mother made buttery toast, bacon and
HOT TEA.
I WAS HOOKED...for life. :>)

hahhhaaa....look at that TOTALLY PINK PHONE CASE.
I just love it to the moon and back....

This beauty is a SNAPFON, which is a phone for....*GULP.....seniors.
Large numbers..
loud ringer...
SOS for emergencies...
It has texting abilities...of which I am learning to do and LOVE IT !

No internet like the smart phones.....it's a 3G, tho and fairly powerful.
Since Mr. Sweet and I use our phones only for talking,
they fit us so so well.
We love 'em, as a matter of fact.
OOO,
and LOVE the $15.00 a month for service....
Yes, ma'am....we are lovin' it.....
and Mr. Sweet said to BE SURE and tell you that HIS phone does NOT have a pink case. ! !

My Christmas flower is still so pretty.

THIS IS THE RECIPE I used.

DATE NUT BREAD/CAKE

1 1/2 cups pitted, chopped DATES
2 1/4 cups boiling water
3 teaspoons baking soda
1 cup chopped nuts ( i always use PECANS)
2 cups white sugar
3 tablespoons margarine
2 beaten eggs
1 teaspoon salt
4 1/2 cup all purpose flower flour :>)
1 full teaspoon of Vanilla....(I always use 1 1/2 teaspoons)
and, like my Aunt Lillian, put a dab of it behind ea ear....:)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan. In a saucepan over medium heat, bring dates and water to a boil. Stir in 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup sugar until melted. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Place date mixture into a large bowl. Blend in flour, eggs and vanilla. Stir in chopped walnuts. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely. THIS TIME is for a large, single loaf. When using the smaller loaf pans, cook time isn't nearly as long.
  4. Cook about 30 minutes...
  5. Test doneness with toothpick .
Mr. Sweet and I thank you all SO much for the well wishes for him and his cold.
He still feels rotten...
You know how colds work...at least a week of feeling bad before you
can claim to still be among the living.
THANK YOU..!

 FOODIE FRIDAY
 PINK SAT.

  1. I hope the Mr feels better soon- these colds are hanging on. Your post made me think of my mom's date nut bread. She used to bake it all the time- in vegetable cans! Then she would wrap and freeze the extras. I loved the smell, the nuts, the bread..but I always ate around the dates. Yuk!

  2. Well, I'm glad SOMEONE introduced you to tea. Can you just imagine life without it? haha! The loaf recipe looks great and I'll add that to my recipe book. Sorry to hear Mr.Sweet is still under the weather but lots of tea with honey should help that. Stay warm. Here it is -20 and windy. Deb

  3. I LOVE date and nut bread, bj! I'm thinking that this is the same recipe that I use and have been making since high school. My own sweet mom mailed me a mini loaf at Christmas and it was soooo good.
I hope Mr. Sweet feels better soon.

  5. Ooooh, I never thought of serving hubby's date-nut bread with sharp Cheddar!
When Tom first asked me to make date-nut bread I ignored my initial instinct to grimace and tried. UNfortunately, that recipe didn't specify adding water, and I killed the poor hand-mixer. (Seriously.) This year's batch was a success ... but NEXT time I'm going to take a chapter from you and add the vanilla.
PS - Behind each ear, hmmm? :)
PPS - Still sending lots of positivity to your Mr. Sweet!

  11. Oh yes! This sounds like a fab recipe! It reminds me so much of my grandmother Estelle. She loved anything with dates, so this is going on to my list for the coming week! I love the stories of dating in high school. Brings back memories for sure! It's probably a good thing to stay young at heart and I think you have done just that sweet BJ! This was such a darling post!!!!

  14. BJ, Give Mr. Sweet some hugs from all of us. He could use a nice cup of tea. LOL. Once my friends made me some hot toddies when I wasn't feeling well. I told them there was no way I could drink that..so they drank them , then asked me if I was feeling any better. LOL. That's friends for you . I sure miss my buddies. The cake looks so very good. I have a cell phone, because my husband made me get one. I can text on it, but still have a hard time getting my pictures in the right order. Blessings to all of you, xoxo,Susie

  17. I still have a dumbphone. Their plans for smartphones are outrageous. I have an iPod Touch which is like a iPhone without the "phone".

  18. Do not own a cell phone. If I did, would like a nice pink one like yours. Texting is good at times, but it has gotten out of hand. Going to see "All Shook Up" including 24 Elvis songs Saturday 17th. Cannot take a camera tho.

  19. What a doll you are for sharing that recipe. Wish I had a slice right now. I only had a very few steady boyfriends in school...
Tell Mr. Sweet I never dreamed he had a pink case!

  20. Ahhh, BJ, the good old days. I can just say ditto and would all be the same for me. Jerry and I graduated in 1957 from the same high school so our reunions are so much fun as we both know everybody. But, sadly, ours are dropping like flies too. That sounds like a great cake. Thanks for the recipe..Happy Weekend..Judy

  21. Bob and I started going steady at age 16 complete with the class ring around my neck, got engaged with a diamond at age 18, and married with a gold ring at age 19 (56 years ago). Needless to say, I'm a proponent of early dating - we grew up together as a couple - it worked for us; and it sure was fun!!!! Sally

  22. Thanks for the trip down 60's lane. Every time I see the Elvis special with him in that black leather suit and so young, I remember why I loved him so much. I actually thought I would marry him when I was about 10 (1960) and saw him in a movie. I was so sure he would find me!

  30. Ah, the good ol' days! It's such a shame that kids grow up so fast these days. I love the 'seniors' phone although I haven't heard of it here...yet.

  31. Hello again bj, Your experience in HS is so much like mine. I LOVED school, boyfriends, girlfriends, rock and Roll music and life in general. Happy times for sure. Innocent fun in those days too.

I copied the date nut bread recipe because I love it so much. Hot tea was always a part of our life because my grandmothers were English.
As far as the new phones I do not have or want one. However, my Bill has the latest and the best there is. He loves his cell phones. Mine is just used for emergencies. I'm fine with that. I do like your pink phone cover though. Smile.

    Have a great week.
    Love,
    Jeanne
