Cripple Creek and Fencing...

When we visited CRIPPLE CREEK, CO. on our summer vacation, we toured their museum.

This is an olden mining town...

"thar's GOLD in them
thar hills..."

We loved the pretty fencing around parts of the museum.

I was hoping to SEE a real gold mine...but no desire to go INSIDE one.
*huge scaredy cat
There is an olden mine beside the museum building and you have
to climb a hill to get to it.

On the grounds around the museum, this short rock fence separated the old mine
from the building.

I wanted that olden BEAUTIFUL GEAR but when I tried to pick it up,
it must have weighed a thousand pounds...
besides...
am pretty sure bells and whistles and horns would have sounded if  I HAD been able to pick it up.

The above fencing ran along side of the old mine.

".....follow the yellow brick road..."

I FINALLY got to the mine...
and not a whole lot to see up there.

Buckets and metal structures and things I didn't know WHAT they were.

The entrance to the gold mine has been filled in with dirt and rocks,
FOR SAFETY.

Speaking of ROCKS...

here's a recipe for the BEST
OATMEAL ROCKS

I have several different recipes for these cookies...
the following is a very good one...
and I wish I had 4 of them with a big cup of coffee....RIGHT NOW !

OATMEAL ROCKS COOKIES

1 c. Crisco
1 c. white sugar
2 c. all-purpose flour
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 c. sweet milk
2 c. 1 minute oats
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. raisins, optional
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. With a mixer, cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Put baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and first cup flour in sifter and sift into creamed mixture and beat. Add rest of flour and beat. Add oats, nuts and only enough milk to make a stiff dough.Drop by teaspoon onto a greased cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Bake about 14 minutes at 350 degrees. Cookies will be brown.
These are some of my favorite cookies....they are a little hard on the outside and soft in the middle...a perfect cookie.

If you like EXTRA SOFT cookies...these AREN'T FOR YOU !
Linking with GOOD FENCES

  3. BJ, You are killing me....trying to lift that gear. If it didn't weigh so much it would have already been carried away, in a big old purse of someone . LOL. Did you get a rock from there. That is usually what I pick up every where I go. I have a jar of my vacation rocks. A little gold nugget would be easier to purse. LOL. Hope you are having a great day. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
p.s. love your sense of humor.

  16. I like your fence finds! I love Colorado, so much to see that I'll never get to see it all, so I love posts like this.
I'm really behind on blog reading lately and I've missed so many posts. I tried to catch up a bit the other night and
fell asleep, so if you see where I was here for a long time, that is why! haha!
Enjoy those cookies, they sound very good.

  18. Two days ago I made oatmeal, pecan and raisin cookies...I'm enjoying them, but will have to try these rocks. For sure.

And Cripple Creek...Now you're getting into my home town territory!! I went down the Mollie Kathleen Mine in Cripple Creek a few times!! Once you get down to the 'level part' from the shaft and elevator [that only holds ten people by the way if I remember correctly], you are taken through the dim lighted tunnels and traipsing through water, dripping and oozing from the shaft...it's eerie, but oh so fun. You should go back and not be so scared next time bj....it's worth the tour.

  19. Gosh I cannot remember the last time I made oatmeal cookies..what is about oatmeal? The smell, the taste...it always makes me think of my grandma, for some reason..homey, old-fashioned. Sigh. We can't eat cookies anymore, thanks to that awful big D. I've been to Cripple Creek- so pretty! I've never been brave enough for any underground tour.

  20. I love CO and Cripple Creek is a favorite! I would never go in a mine...nope, not me! Have you been to Carlsbad Caverns? So incredibly beautiful but it makes me hyper-ventilate to think of it. I'm glad I made it through once...never again. I'm too claustrophobic!

Would love to have 4 of those cookies right now too! I love oatmeal cookies...always have. I think they remind people of their grandmothers. :)

  34. That mine was intriguing. But, like you said, not much to look at once you got there. That's too bad. I'd love your cookies. I am a 'crunchy outside, soft inside' kind of gal.
